How is laparoscopic appendectomy performed?

You'll have general anesthesia for a laparoscopic appendectomy. The surgeon closes the incisions with very small stitches, staples, glue or surgical tape when the surgery is over.

Once you are asleep, the surgeon makes an incision near your belly button and inserts a small device called a port. The port creates an opening that the doctor can use to fill the abdomen with gas. This creates space for the operation. After that, a small camera is inserted through the port. The camera displays the surgery on a monitor in the operating room. Some people cannot have laparoscopic appendectomy. You may have open surgery with a single large incision if you are one of these people. Reasons for open surgery to remove or switch to an appendix are:

1. The appendix is very inflamed or there is an abscess (a large area of bacteria accumulating).
2. Your appendix has been punctured (exploded).
3. You are obese.
4. The doctor cannot see your organs.
5. You have bleeding problems during the surgery.
